Product Variations can be used if you are stocking an item that is available in alternating colours, sizes, flavours, toppings, etc., but will be priced the same. You can also change the unit cost with Product Variations if you have a variation that has cost more to manufacture. For instance, if it costs your business $0.20 more to top a loaf of bread with sunflower seeds, you can add this to a variation. You’ll see how this works further down!

Although you can add unit cost to Product Variations if need be, this shouldn’t be confused with Product Options. Product Options is more for applying additional services to product purchases, like extended warrantees, gift wrapping or a personalised message. If you’d like to read more about this, see our Product Options article here.

Let’s look at how you’d set up Product Variations on your site!

  1. In the Edit view of your site, find the product you would like to add a Product Variation to.
  1. Select the dollar sign option ($) in the Product Details bar, seen in red box below.

  1. You will see that under Product identifiers and pricing, the no variations option is already selected by default. To add a product variation, simply select the option below by clicking the circle.
  1. To explain what you’ll be seeing now, we’ve made a handy guide using a test site of ours. We already have our products entered – we’ll just break down the variation table for you (see 4a).
It’s important to note that for each product you want to add variations to, you need enter every possible combination. We’ve made an infographic (see 4b) to visually explain this, and you will also see what we’ve done in our variation table.
4a. A breakdown of the variation table.

4b. You need to enter every possible combination. For example:

       Rye > Pumpkin > Sliced
       Rye > Pumpkin > Unsliced
       Rye > Poppy > Sliced
       Rye > Poppy > Unsliced

  1. To add a variation of your product, simply click “Add a VARIATION”.

A new column will pop up and prompt you to add a title. See below.

  2. Once you have named your variation column, go ahead, and fill in all ROWS with every possible combinationnow including the new variation. New rows will automatically generate.

  3. When you have done this, be sure to hit “FINISH” at the bottom right or your screen.
  4. Now when you go to the product, you will find drop-down lists for different product variations. See below.

  1. Publish to save changes.

Just like that, you have Product Variations! For Product Options, please see the link at the top of this article. If you have any further questions, our Support Team is happy to help.
