What is Storbie?

Sarah owns a successful boutique store selling a wonderful collection of carefully selected gifts. She is tired of being asked why it is not possible to buy her products online and knows that an online store would be great for business. She’s on a budget and is afraid that if she approaches a web-design company to build a site for her that there will be lots of hidden costs and unexpected problems.

Josh has recently returned home after travelling the world. While overseas he discovered a fantastic brand of amplifiers and feels that he could make a good profit selling them on the internet. He’s built some web sites before for his friends but knows that it can burn a lot of time. He just wants to get on with it rather than worrying about all of the technical details and ongoing maintenance problems.

For Sarah and Josh Storbie is just what they are looking for. Using Storbie they can have their ecommerce store up and running on the internet within hours. Better still, their site will be entirely within their control. They are able to easily update their site’s content, products and images and make the updates instantly available.

Sarah and Josh don’t need to be super-technical. All they need is a computer, an internet connection and a sense of adventure.

It is free to create a Storbie shop. The low monthly fee is payable only when you are ready to start selling and there are no hidden fees. Hosting and support is all included. Storbie is integrated with a number of payment providers such as eWAY, PayPal and DPS Payment Express and charges no additional success or transaction fees.

Creating a Store: Step by Step

What Do I Need to Get Started?

Below is a checklist of things that you will need to create a simple Storbie store and start selling online. If you don’t have everything just yet, don’t worry, do as much as you can and update your content later when you do.
  • A name for your store
  • Your logo
  • A hero image: At least 2000 pixels wide
  • Some text about your business
  • For your products:
    • At least one good quality image
    • A description of the product
    • A selling price
  • An understanding of the cost of shipping your products. We suggest that you keep this as simple as possible. Even better, build these costs into your product’s selling price and offer ‘free shipping’ as this attracts buyers.
  • A bank account for your buyers to deposit money into
Save all of your text into a document, have your logo or banner image plus product images stored in a folder on your computer.

Now that you have these things gathered together you can have a shop up and running on the internet in less than 30 minutes.

Create Your Store (If you have already created a shop start here)

Let’s get started.
  1. Go to www.storbie.com.
  2. Click on Create a shop
  3. If you haven’t logged in with an existing Storbie account then you will be asked to sign up.
  4. Type in your email address, create a password, add a phone number and read and agree to our terms and conditions then click Create my ecommerce shop now.
  5. You will be taken to the following page which is your website homepage. Note that you are in Edit mode.

In Edit mode you can now start editing the example content right away and replace it with your own text and images! Follow these simple steps.

Adding Your Logo or Banner Image

First off the bat is adding in your own logo or banner image.
  1. Click on the button Edit for SITE.
  2. You will now land in your Page Header Master area, this page is where you will manage the content items that will appear in the Page Header areas on each page of your site.
  3. Now click the EDIT button next to 'Banner'.
  4. Check the box that indicates that you would like to upload a custom banner image.
  5. Click NEXT.
  6. Click on the area that says Drop FILES HERE or click to SELECT. You will be taken to the Image Management area of your shop.
  7. Click on the area that says click to UPLOAD, find your logo or banner image on your computer and upload it to your shop.
  8. You can also upload a mobile alternative image which will be displayed when your site is viewed on a mobile device. This is optional.
  9. Click NEXT to adjust the alignment and sizing of your new image.
  10. In the last step you have some options that decide how your navigation is organised. Have a quick read of the instructions in this wizard and decide which option you prefer. Remember this can always be changed afterwards.
  11. The final option here determines whether the banner and navigation (if grouped together) are to span the width of the page or be constrained to the width of your page content. It is worth trialling a few different combinations to see what works best for you.
  12. Now click on FINISH.
  13. Your new banner image will be loaded into your store.

Editing Your Homepage Content

Adding your hero image

  1. Make sure that you are in Edit mode.
  2. To add in your own high resolution hero image click the EDIT button next to the current example welcome image.
  3. In the set up wizard, add the image that you would like to display on your homepage. You can also choose an alternative image for mobile devices if you wish. Then select NEXT. Make sure this image is at least 2000 pixels wide.
  4. You have the option to add a 3D parallax effect which adds a nice element of depth to your page. The background of your page will move at a slower/faster rate (depending on your choice) than the foreground which creates a 3D effect as you scroll down the page.
  5. You also have the option to layer text and/or a button over the hero image. There are further options for animation and the overlay, we recommend trying out a few combinations to see what works best.
  6. Click FINISH to view your new hero image.

Adding your business description

  1. Make sure that you are in Edit mode.
  2. Click the EDIT button on the Formatted Text content item just below your new hero image.
  3. You'll enter into an editing wizard that will allow you to write or paste in your own business description.
  4. Once you're done, click FINISH.
    Note there are some more options in this wizard - image, format and borders - these are optional so you can just leave these for now.

Loading Your Products

We will now load your products into your store.

  1. Make sure that you are in Edit mode.
  2. Click the SHOP tab.
  3. Click on Create a NEW PRODUCT.
  4. Type in the name of your product.
  5. Click NEXT.
  6. Enter the price that you would like to sell the product for, including any variants.
  7. Click NEXT.
  8. Enter a description for the product, or copy and paste the text from a document that you have prepared earlier.
  9. Click NEXT.
  10. Click on Drop FILE HERE or click to SELECT and select or upload your product’s image.
  11. Click FINISH.
  12. The product will be displayed on the page.
  13. Repeat this process for your other products.

Publish Your Changes

  1. Hover over the CHANGES button at the top of the screen and choose VIEW/UNDO all changes.
  2. You will see a list of all of the changes that you have made so far. These are the changes that you see when you PREVIEW your store. To publish your changes click on PUBLISH all changes (you can also roll back all of those changes by clicking on UNDO all changes).
  3. Now that your changes are published you can view them using the VIEW button. You can now make more changes to your shop, preview them and publish them when they look just right or roll them back if things go astray.
Note: When you roll back changes, all changes are undone back to the last time that you clicked publish. We recommend that you publish your changes regularly, every time you are happy with your work to that point. This gives you a good place to roll back to should you make a mistake.

Adding an About Page

We will now add an ‘About Us’ page to tell your customers a bit about your business.

  1. Make sure that you are in Edit mode.
  2. Click the + image next to your Contact page to add a new page.
  3. Name your new page.
  4. Click NEXT
  5. Choose the page's Visibility
  6. Click NEXT
  7. Choose an appropriate image. This will be used in the page gallery on your homepage next to Contact and Shop
  8. You can now click FINISH and your About page will be created.
  9. Click on the drop down menu on the Content bar and select Formatted Text.
  10. Enter some text describing your store.
  11. Click FINISH.
  12. Content can be cut, pasted, moved up, down and be deleted using the following buttons:
  13. If you would like to hide the title on this page click on Hide TITLE button.
  14. You might want to add some images to this page. Click on Add SIDEBAR on the right.
  15. Hover over the down arrow on the sidebar and click on Image.
  16. Select your image and click FINISH.
  17. Repeat for any further images.
  18. Click PREVIEW to preview your store.

Payment Methods

Shops can go live without a payment method, products will be set to "enquire only" mode and customers can get in contact with you via your website.

However, if you would like to enable ecommerce in your store and be able to sell products then you will need to add a payment method.

To add a payment method:
  1. Click on Manage at the top of the page, to the left of the EDIT, PREVIEW and VIEW buttons.
  2. Click onSettings.
  3. Click on Payment Methods.
  4. If you wish you may choose to use one of the following integrated payment methods
  5. Alternatively you may wish to use a custom payment method
  6. If you are using a custom payment method, select the form that you would like to use.
  7. Follow the instructions and select FINISH.

Go Live

You are now ready to take your shop live.

  1. Go to the Overview tab in the Manage area.
  2. Click on the button Launch MY SHOP NOW.
  3. You will be presented with a page verifying your monthly fees, including a date confirming when your first payment will be made.
  4. Now you will need to Set up payment, this will prompt you to add a credit or debit card to your account 
  5. Add in your card details and click Save.
  6. You'll be returned to your shop and see a your new card has been added.
  7. Click Confirm to launch your shop!
  8. Your site will then be instantly available on the internet and ready to show off to the world!

Getting More Fancy

Use Your Own Web Address

Storbie shops have a web address similar to example-shop.mystorbie.com, however we recommend you use your own domain such as http://www.example.com.

If you are registered for GST, you can put your GST number into Storbie. GST will then be automatically calculated and lodged against New Zealand orders. You can choose to list your prices as GST inclusive or exclusive.
